The way of life.

I recently came across a youtube channel called The School of Life. It has lots of summarise videos on topics like Philosophy and History. Pretty interesting! I encourage anyone who have the slight interest on these topics to check it out:

I wish philosophy was taught in secondary school. We were taught about math, science, but how about the way of life? We are often taught to be obedient - this is the way it should be, just follow and you will not go wrong. But i've seen so many friends having quarter-life crisis, asking themselves what is the meaning of life? Chasing after "The Nothing".
I wish school taught us to be more critical and how important it is to have a mind of our own.

My Views:

These are a few guidelines that I have set for myself on how I should lead my life:
  1. Dream as if you live forever. My friends often say that i'm being too idealistic. I think people should be more accepting towards idealists. We should always be dreaming about the perfect world, because that is the first step to making changes. Why is it not that way? What is wrong? What can be done? How should it be done? That brings me to my next point...
  2. Spend more time thinking. "We are richer than we think, each one of us" by Michael de Montaigne. It's funny how academy makes us study other people books before we study our own mind. I think waking up earlier to think, reflect, and write is a good habit.
  3. Live as if you die today. Death is often a taboo topic, we rarely talk about it. But i think we should always prepare ourselves for it so that we don't lose ourselves chasing after things that absolutely mean nothing.
  4. Live dangerously! "How little do you know about human happiness you comfortable people" by Friedrich Nietsche. Get yourself out of your comfort zone!
  5. Don't believe in prayers, because you cannot expect god to bend the universal rules just for you. Use your wisdom to find a solution or simply learn to accept the outcome.
  6. Stay calm. When faced with a problem, always try to break them down into smaller problems.
  7. There are always other options. "Because life is a lot weirder than we think, it's far richer in possibilities," by Jean Paul Sartre.
  8. But expect the worst, because honestly, the world is such a miserable place to begin with. "What need is there to weep over parts of life, the whole calls for tears" by Lucius Annaeus Seneca.
  9. Make yourself feel insignificant at times, only then you will know how minor your problem is and have a different perspective about things.
  10. Do not avoid talking to people who thinks differently. There's always things to learn from your worst enemy. Challenge them by asking them questions.
  11. Treat people the way you want them to treat you, and be patient and more understanding to those who have not gotten hold of virtue.
  12. Capitalism is bullshit. "Capitalism is like a giant machine designed to create sense of necessity which doesn't exist in reality. It make us tell ourselves that we have to work for a certain number of hours, buy a certain product or service. This lead to the denial of freedom and the possibility of living in other ways." by Jean Paul Sartre
  13. But because it is the way it is now, always be reminded that Money is just a tool, use it well. Money and fame gives you power, and with power you can do great things! But it can also lead you into evilness. So watch out!
  14. Privilege equals to greater responsibility. Life is not fair, the more you are given, the greater responsibility you have to help those who are given less. If you think that your success is a result of your own intelligence and hard-work, think again.
  15. Less is more. What need is there to chase after material goods? You will soon find the beauty of a minimalist lifestyle.
  16. Study history, there are many things we can learn from it. Know that progression usually lead us from one extreme end to another. We need to find the balance.
  17. Don't follow social norms blindly. Understand that some social norms are simply rules set because of a particular event in history, It may no longer be applicable in today's context.
  18. Create art. "Art is to take all those good, important ideas that we know to make them stick more imaginatively in our minds," by Hegel.

So you know a little more about me now. Thanks! ;)
